Ken,

I stubled onto your page when I was searching for solutions to a problem not unlike the one you
describe. I've been struggling to find a solution and I think I may have one that works. Here's
what I experienced:

MP3s I ripped using audiograbber and lame, 192/44.1 non-vbr
Worked on the computer
worked on the old mp3 player (a first gen creative labs hard drive player)
played just fine in itunes
played just fine if I played it using explorer in XP to browse to the location on the ipod
ipod would skip the song
I tried erasing it and reinstalling it
I tried formatting the drive
I tried everything I could think of (including all the other things you tried)
Nothing was working... at least not till just now...

I had this thought: Apple has never made the most solid PC software... perhaps this simply comes
down to a path length or file length problem. I moved the files to a c:\5\ and changed all the file
names to shorter than 8 chars. Worked like a charm. Could be a fluke but could be the answer you're
looking for so I figured I would share. Let me know if this helps.
