The ipod skipping problem you described is happening on my iPod too.
its a 20gb 4g aswell, and all the songs are fine through itunes.
I wouldn't say that its 20 to 30% failure but probably 5 or 6% (of around 
4,000songs).
I'm using a dell inspiron 5150 and have no problems with any of my other usb 
devices.
I was glad to find your site and see the problem is not just with my ipod,
If you have come across a solution since you last updated your site I'd love 
to know about it.
(I know its unlikely!)
